Derbyshire abroad: Abbott wins Big Bash

There was success for Sean Abbott over the weekend, as he helped Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash title against Melbourne Stars.

The Australia international, who will join Derbyshire for the Vitality Blast, as well as up to nine County Championship fixtures, was limited to seven appearances in the competition due to a side strain, but he still managed to claim 14 wickets at an average of just 13.57.

11 of those dismissals came in his first five appearances, which put him top of the wicket-taking charts prior to his injury.

However, Abbott wasted little time in adding to his tally when he claimed 3-23 against Melbourne on his return to action, to send Sydney through to the Big Bash final.

He was unable to take a wicket in the final, with his spell going for a total of 19 runs, as Melbourne Stars could only manage 97 from 12 overs in a rain-affected game.

Ben McDermott

Ben McDermott’s Hobart Hurricanes also made it through to the knockout stages of the Big Bash, before they were eliminated by Sydney Thunder.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 265 runs across 14 innings, at an average of 26.50 and a strike-rate of 122.68.

McDermott was equally effective behind the stumps, claiming six catches and two stumpings in the competition.

Both players will be with Derbyshire during the Vitality Blast, as the Falcons aim to make it back-to-back Finals Day appearances.
