Ben McDermott’s Tasmania edged out Sean Abbott’s New South Wales when the sides met in the Sheffield Shield over the weekend.
After New South Wales had been dismissed for 195, with Nathan Ellis claiming 6-43 for Tasmania, Abbott struck back by taking 4-52 from 23 overs.
McDermott struck six fours on his way to a 95-ball 46, but he was trapped lbw by Jack Edwards before he could reach his half-century.
Abbott himself got in on the runs in the second innings, scoring four fours as he hit 35 from just 40 balls, but it was not enough to prevent his side from defeat.
McDermott was not required to bat in the run chase, as Jordan Silk hit 67 as Tasmania secured a nine-wicket victory at Hobart.
The Derbyshire squad have travelled to Zimbabwe to begin the 2020 pre-season tour, in partnership with Briggs of Burton.
The squad and coaches will be based in Bulawayo for most of their three-week stay, where they will play a total of six matches, across three formats, against strong opposition.
The team will also intersperse regular training sessions with community-focused activities and training sessions with local clubs, as well as a visit to Victoria Falls.
The players will return to Derby on Sunday 29 March, three weeks before the County Championship opener against Leicestershire at The Pattonair County Ground.
