Nic Smith, of Belper Meadows CC, got in touch with a recollection of his first visit to watch Derbyshire.
Nic wrote: “Whilst sitting at home during these strange times my mind began to wander to my first recollection of Derbyshire.
“It was versus West Indies, I could not remember much detail other than going with an older relative who was a Member and sitting in the area that still exists in front of the old Grandstand, Laurie Johnson walking off towards us having scored some runs.
“My other recollection was queuing up with many others at the steps of the visitors’ tour bus to collect the autographs of these stars. Having just looked up the match details it was 1966, Laurie Johnson got 90, the Derbyshire team had many of the names I subsequently watched as a junior Member and the tourists were all stars, more or less a full Test team with the likes of Sobers, Griffiths, Hunte, Butcher, Holford, Hendriks, no wonder Derbyshire lost by an innings!
“This visit to Derby whet my appetite for watching Derbyshire cricket, and as junior Member until going to University, I followed them around the county, and spent many a summer holiday travelling on the train & bus with bat, ball, sandwiches and drink to Buxton, Chesterfield, Ilkeston and Derby, watching county and international teams and getting many autographs of great cricketers, Colin Bland, Graham Pollock, Lance Gibbs, Bishan Bedi, Glenn Turner and many England players.
“After over 30 years of playing local cricket I have re-joined as a Member, and still enjoy watching the team, and wandering around the ground, meeting people I played against many years ago.”
