Madsen and Godleman hit fifties on Day One

Written by Stephen Martin

Derbyshire first innings: 163-2: Madsen (68*), Godleman (60).
Lancashire first innings: 89-1: Bohannon (37*), Conners (1-28).

Wayne Madsen (68 not out) and Billy Godleman (60) both scored half-centuries on Day One of Derbyshire’s two-day friendly with Lancashire at Chester Boughton Hall.

Madsen batted for more than 57 of Derbyshire’s 60 overs, while Godleman’s 60 came as part of a 118-run second-wicket partnership, with Tom Bailey and George Balderson claiming wickets for the hosts, with the innings closing on 163-2.

The visitors bowled for the final session of the day, and Sam Conners made a dent in the Lancashire batting lineup when he bowled Alex Davies for 10, before Josh Bohannon (37 not out) and Keaton Jennings (35 not out) saw the hosts to 89-1 at the close.

A final warm-up fixture before the Bob Willis Trophy begins on Saturday, both sides took the opportunity to get some much-needed minutes in the middle amid windy conditions in Chester.

An uncontested toss saw Derbyshire bat for the first 60 overs of the match, although Luis Reece would face 11 balls before he was caught by Davies off Bailey for five.

Madsen arrived at the crease, and along with the captain, played a watchful innings to see the side 54-1 at lunch, still with 30 overs left to bat.

The duo would remain at the crease for the majority of that time, with Godleman looking in good touch as he hopes to build on a 2019 campaign that saw him score more than 2,000 runs.

Here, he managed 60 before being caught by Davies off Balderson, before Madsen and Leus du Plooy both finished unbeaten to close the innings on 163-2.

Having signed a new contract extension last week, Sam Conners showed an early glimpse of his development over the winter when he bowled Davies for 10.

However, that was the only dismissal Derbyshire would claim before the close of play, with Lancashire set to resume tomorrow on 89-1, with Bohannon (37 not out) and Jennings (35 not out) unbeaten, trailing by 74.
