Michael Cohen (2-61), Ben Aitchison (1-37) and Anuj Dal (1-38) shared four wickets on a difficult Day One for Derbyshire’s bowlers against Yorkshire.
Aitchison and Dal struck in the first session, before Cohen’s quickfire double after lunch made a dent in the hosts’ innings in gloomy conditions at Emerald Headingley.
Dawid Malan (145 not out) and Jonny Tattersall (64 not out) put Yorkshire in a commanding position on Day One, with their unbeaten partnership of 174 meaning they ended the day 280-4.
Under cloudy skies, captain Billy Godleman chose to bowl and his decision immediately looking a good one when Aitchison had Tom Kohler-Cadmore (0) caught by Matt Critchley after just 1.4 overs.
England’s Jonny Bairstow came to the crease, and after a testing start against Dustin Melton, he struck four boundaries on his way to 22 before Dal glanced his outside edge through to the keeper.
The hosts went to lunch on 82-2, with Adam Lyth and Malan in, but the former would only last a further six overs after the interval before edging a Cohen delivery to Harvey Hosein for 31.
Cohen took the momentum from that wicket into the rest of the over, and Harry Brook (0) was the next to fall on just the third delivery he faced, with Wayne Madsen doing well to hold on to the ball which flew to him in the slips.
However, Derbyshire were unable to build on that burst of wickets, as Tattersall and Malan dug in and regained control of the innings for their side, with the latter reaching his century in 136 balls, including 15 fours.
As the bowlers continued to plug away, Tattersall himself reached 50 in 122 balls, including five fours, as the fifth-wicket partnership moved Yorkshire into a commanding position on the first evening.
By the time bad light brought an end to the day’s play, Malan (145 not out) and Tattersall’s (64 not out) stand was at 174, with Yorkshire 280-4 at the close.
