Pre-Match Pack: Yorkshire

Friday 14th August 2020
Written by Stephen Martin

Derbyshire have named a 13-man squad for their Bob Willis Trophy North Group encounter with Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley, starting Saturday 15 August (11am).

Wayne Madsen and Leus du Plooy retain their place in the squad, after good performances against Leicestershire, while Tom Wood travels with the side for the first times since signing an all-formats deal for 2020.

Matt Critchley will be looking to build on his career-best figures at The Fischer County Ground, while Harvey Hosein’s performance both behind and in front of the stumps will give him momentum ahead of the Yorkshire clash.

Dustin Melton claimed five wickets in Leicester, and he’s joined as a seam option by Sam Conners, Michael Cohen and Ben Aitchison, with all-rounders Anuj Dal, Nils Priestley and Alex Hughes also named.

A minor knock means Luis Reece is rested for the trip to Emerald Headingley, while fellow all-rounder, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, continues to recover well from a thigh injury sustained at Trent Bridge.

The Opposition

Having picked up 40 points from their opening two games, Yorkshire will know that a win for either side at Emerald Headingley will be a significant step towards securing top spot in the North Group.

The North is the only group to have two sides on 40 points or more, with Derbyshire’s 44 the most in the country, and Harry Brook’s 199 runs at an average of 66.33 have been key to the White Rose’s strong start.

With the ball, Jordan Thompson has led the way by averaging 12.44 for his nine wickets, while Yorkshire could be boosted by Johnny Bairstow’s availability, after he played in the win over Nottinghamshire.

Pre-Match Talk

Matt Critchley says Derbyshire are looking forward to the challenge of facing Yorkshire, with both sides boasting 100% records in the Bob Willis Trophy so far.

Critchley’s career-best figures of 6-73 propelled Derbyshire to a three-day victory over Leicestershire, while Yorkshire defeated Nottinghamshire a day later to move within four points of Billy Godleman’s table-topping side.

The all-rounder says that both side’s recent form will make the fixture one to savour.

“They might have a couple of players back from the England squad, so obviously they’re a good side,” said Critchley.

“I’ve never played Yorkshire in a four-day game, so I’m looking forward to that. They’ll be a good team but hopefully we can take the momentum from the last few games.

“We’ve been putting in good performances, so we’re looking forward to the game.”
