Saturday 29th August 2020
Written by Stephen Martin

Derbyshire have named a 16-man squad for their Bank Holiday Weekend double-header against Yorkshire Vikings (Sunday) and Lancashire Lightning (Monday).

All 14 of the players that were named in the squad for the abandoned Vitality Blast opener against Leicestershire Foxes retain their place, while wicketkeeper-batsman Harvey Hosien, and fast bowler Dustin Melton come into the squad.

Due to loan restrictions, Ed Barnes will be unavailable for the game against Yorkshire Vikings, while Brooke Guest will be forced to miss the clash with his parent club, Lancashire, on Monday.

Captain Billy Godleman is joined in the squad by fellow top-order batsmen Luis Reece, Wayne Madsen, Leus du Plooy and Tom Wood, while Matt Critchley, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Alex Hughes, Anuj Dal and Mattie McKiernan all provide options with bat and ball.

The Opposition

Derbyshire went unbeaten against both sides in Twenty20 cricket last season, with the double over Yorkshire taking the Falcons’ winning streak over the White Rose to six games.

Yorkshire’s opening pair of Tom Kohler-Cadmore (435) and Adam Lyth (379) scored more than 800 runs between them in the 2019 campaign, with each batsman showcasing their power with strike rates of 141.23 and 155.96 respectively.

For Lancashire, Alex Davies will be hoping to once again top the scoring charts for his side, having struck 307 at an average of 38.37, while spinner Matt Parkinson was a key man last season after taking 21 wickets.

Like Derbyshire, Yorkshire saw their Vitality Blast opener against Notts Outlaws rained off. Lancashire , however, enjoyed a dominant start to their white-ball campaign, as Keaton Jennings’ 108 led them to a 27-run victory over Durham.

Pre-Match Talk

Dominic Cork says Derbyshire will go into their Vitality Blast fixtures against Yorkshire Vikings and Lancashire Lightning full of confidence.

The Falcons come into their Bank Holiday Weekend double-header having seen their opening fixture against Leicestershire Foxes abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

With two games in quick-succession, Twenty20 Head Coach, Cork, says that both games will be a challenge, but the squad has already proven they can compete in such situations.

“It’s a war against the roses, if we put it like that,” Cork said.

“We know we’ve had some good results against Yorkshire for a period of time now, so they will be looking to rectify that, but we will be very confident going into that.

“They are good teams both Yorkshire and Lancashire and we need to be on our mettle and make sure we  play as well as we did last year but we are feeling quite confident that if we play as well as we can, we can upset the odds.”
