Derbyshire Abroad: McDermott in fine form

Wednesday 16th December 2020
Written by Stephen Martin

Ben McDermott’s good form with the bat continued, with the wicketkeeper-batsman hitting an unbeaten century for Australia A against India, before top-scoring with a scintillating 46 in his first BBL innings of the season.

McDermott’s inclusion in the three-day first-class fixture meant that he missed Hobart Hurricanes’ first two Big Bash games, but he still showed off his boundary hitting ability against a strong India bowling attack, containing the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

He smashed 16 fours on his way to 107 not out, putting on a mammoth partnership of 165 with Jack Wildermuth (111 not out) to secure the stalemate in Sydney.

Just two days later, McDermott returned to white-ball action against Adelaide Strikers, and he showed no hesitation in getting his BBL campaign off to a bang, scoring 46 off just 33 balls, including two fours and three sixes, the biggest of which landed on the roof of the stadium.

Despite a five-wicket defeat to the Strikers, Hobart have won two of their opening three Big Bash fixtures.
