Derbyshire Abroad: McDermott shines ahead of Big Bash opener

Tuesday 8th December 2020
Written by Stephen Martin

Ben McDermott finalised his Big Bash preparations in style, as he smashed 96 off just 49 balls in Hobart Hurricanes’ warm-up fixture against Sydney Sixers at Kingston Twin Ovals.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, who has committed to Derbyshire for the 2021 Vitality Blast and Royal London Cup, showed off his unique mix of powerful hitting and clever strokeplay throughout the innings, guiding his side to a score of 175-5.

The Australia international already has a T20 century to his name, and he came close to repeating that feat against the Sixers, falling just four runs short of three figures, boasting an incredible strike rate of 195.92.

Despite McDermott’s top-score, Hurricanes could not secure victory with the ball, as Sydney scored the winnings runs in a thrilling final-ball victory.

The sides will meet again on Thursday as they kick off the Big Bash, with McDermott looking to make his mark against the reigning champions at the Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
