Derbyshire Abroad: McDermott leads Hurricanes to victory

Wednesday 20th January 2021
Written by Stephen Martin

Ben McDermott smashed an incredible 56-ball 96 to lead Hobart Hurricanes to a six-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder.

The wicketkeeper-batsman claimed two catches to dismiss Oliver Davies (0) and Sam Billings (50), as the Thunder set Hobart a target of 178 to win. They got off to the worst possible start, as Will Jacks (0) and D’Arcy Short (6) fell in the first over.

McDermott and England’s Dawid Malan pulled the game back into Hobart’s favour with well-paced batting, combined with big hitting, before the latter was dismissed for 42.

However, McDermott continued to show off the kind of mind-blowing power that Derbyshire supporters can look forward to in the 2021 Vitality Blast, as he hit eight fours and five sixes, becoming the first man to reach 20 maximums in this season’s Big Bash. The Australia international even smashed one out of the ground, something that is becoming a signature move for him.

Just four runs short of a second T20 century, McDermott was dismissed, but Hobart were able to fire their way to victory, keeping them in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
