Derbyshire claimed four wickets, but rain dominated on Day Two of the LV= County Championship fixture against Warwickshire.
Ben Aitchison (2-31), Sam Conners (2-40) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (1-37) all claimed dismissals for the visitors, despite regular intervals due to bad weather.
Rob Yates (40) made a dent in the deficit for the hosts, while an unbeaten partnership of 55 between Matt Lamb (41 not out) and Tim Bresnan (27) left them trailing by just 20 runs, closing on 169-5.
Having already delayed the start of Day Two by 25 minutes, the rain returned to force the players from the field after just 8.4 overs, bringing about an early lunch.
After play had resumed, Derbyshire made a positive start, which was rewarded with the wicket of Yates (40), who was caught by Wayne Madsen off Hudson-Prentice.
Madsen was in the action again for the wicket of Sam Hain, who nicked a Ben Aitchison delivery to second slip, while Conners had Dom Sibley (29) caught behind soon after.
Aitchison struck once more before tea, as Michael Burgess feathered one through to Harvey Hosein for seven, leaving the hosts 114-5.
Rain twice halted proceedings after the tea interval, with the second stoppage bringing an end to proceedings on Day Two, leaving Warwickshire 169-5, trailing Derbyshire by 20 runs ahead of the penultimate day.
