Second XI: Hughes, McKiernan and Dal hit half-centuries in defeat

Mattie McKiernan, Anuj Dal and Alex Hughes were among five half-centurions in Derbyshire’s Second XI Championship defeat to Durham.

McKiernan scored a quickfire 71 from 36 balls, while Dal (72) and Hughes (71) got the visitors off to a strong start, as they attempted to chase a mammoth target of 551.

Ben Hutchinson top-scored with 85 on the final day, while Liam Naylor also made 70, but Derbyshire were beaten by 143 runs, thanks to figures of 4-61 from Durham’s Liam Trevaskis.

The hosts took control of the game in their first innings, with Michael Jones scoring an unbeaten 200, while Graham Clark made 147. Wicketkeeper Brooke Guest took three catches, but Durham declared on 552-4.

After Derbyshire were dismissed for 187, Trevaskis top-scored with 73 not out, despite a much-improved bowling performance, which saw McKiernan claim 3-22.

Durham again declared , this time on 185-8, but Derbyshire were unable to chase down the huge target, or see the final day out for a draw.
