Derbyshire great, John Wright, will remain Club President throughout 2021, after accepting the position at last night’s Annual General Meeting.

Wright, who scored a total of 10,638 first-class runs and 4,331 List A runs for Derbyshire, including 31 centuries and a top-score of 190, held the position throughout 2020, but was unable to visit the club due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the request of the Supervisory Board, with a swell of support from the Derbyshire Members, Wright was offered the chance to continue the position for a second term, in line with Club Rules.

Residing in New Zealand, for whom the batsman scored more than 9,000 runs across all formats, Wright enthusiastically accepted the position, and is looking forward to continuing his strong connection with the club.

“I’m honoured to accept this position. Derbyshire has a big place in my heart, it’s where I got my first opportunity,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate that I was not able to be with the club last summer, but I hope to be with you all later this year and watch cricket with our supporters.

“It’s been a trying time for us all, but we should look towards this summer with optimism, I’m delighted to be President of Derbyshire and I’m very proud of our club. We’re a real team, on and off the field.

“I have some wonderful memories, not only of the cricket that I played with Derbyshire, but the people I met, because I think our club represents the traditions of English County Cricket. I wish Dave Houghton and the squad, who I have been immensely impressed with, all the best for the coming season.”

Chairman, Ian Morgan, added: “John is one of the finest players to ever represent our club, and we’re thrilled that he will be able to continue as Club President into 2021.

“As the pandemic put paid to many of the plans that John had for his time in the role, we had huge support from our Members. who were eager to see John remain in the role for this year, and we are delighted that he has accepted the offer.

“Whether it be from the sunny shores of New Zealand, or the Incora County Ground, John always represents the club with pride and affection for the staff, players and supporters.”
