As the 2021 Vitality Blast draws closer, we take a look at the big-hitting batsmen in Derbyshire’s ranks aiming to power the Falcons out of the group stage for the third time in five seasons.

From a Derbyshire legend famous for his innovation, to an international batsman looking to make his mark on English cricket, this year’s Blast is sure to see plenty of powerful sixes at The Incora County Ground.

Who are Derbyshire’s big-hitters?

Having scored a combined 14 half-centuries between them as Derbyshire reached Finals Day for the first time in 2019, the quartet of Billy Godleman, Luis Reece, Wayne Madsen and Leus du Plooy all have the ability to take the game away from the opposition.

Captain Godleman leads the way, with 1,820 T20 runs to his name and a strike rate of 116.14. He has struck 12 career half-centuries and a top-score of 92, which came against Worcestershire in 2019.

Madsen has the second-most T20 sixes (61) in Derbyshire’s history, just two behind Wes Durston’s 63. With a strike-rate of 133.12 and 20 T20 half-centuries, he will be looking to add to his already outstanding record for the club this year.

The Falcons will be boosted by the arrival of Australia international Ben McDermott this year, after the Tasmania wicketkeeper-batsman signed for both white ball competitions.

Having scored 402 runs at 36.54, including three half-centuries, a strike-rate of 139.58 and multiple mind-blowing sixes, he arrives at The Incora County Ground in good form, with the potential to clear even the biggest boundaries around.

Blast News

McDermott has now arrived in the UK and will join up with his teammates ahead of this season’s Vitality Blast, which begins on Wednesday 9 June against Lancashire. Unfortunately, he will not play alongside fellow countryman Billy Stanlake after the fast bowler was ruled out for the rest of the season with a stress fracture.

Twenty20 Head Coach Dominic Cork is also back in the country after covering the IPL and PSL. The Derbyshire great will lead the side into the competition for the third-straight season, after achieving a maiden Finals Day appearance in 2019.
