Logan van Beek took 2-44 and held his nerve in the final over as Netherlands secured a thrilling one-run victory over Ireland in the first ODI.

Derbyshire’s returning overseas quick, who helped the side reach Vitality Blast Finals Day in 2019, also made a crucial 29 with the bat to help his side set the visitors a target of 196 to win.

Van Beek trapped William Porterfield (5) lbw, while Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie was also dismissed by the Wellington Firebirds fast bowler.

With 12 runs needed for Ireland to win the game, van Beek stepped up for the Netherlands and restricted them to ten, earning his side the narrow win and crucial points towards ICC World Cup qualification.

Ireland levelled the series two days later, despite van Been making an unbeaten 22 and producing a brilliant delivery to dismiss Porterfield, who he bowled for nought.
