On Wayne Madsen’s birthday, we take an in-depth look at his highest scores in each format for Derbyshire.
A modern Derbyshire great, who has scored more than 17,000 runs across all formats for the Club, Madsen has provided many memorable moments in our colours.
As he prepares to play a key role under Mickey Arthur in 2022, let’s take a look back Madsen’s highest scores for Derbyshire in first-class, List A and Twenty20 cricket.
Highest Score in first-class cricket: 231 not out from vs Northamptonshire in 2012
In a year where Madsen was appointed as captain, he guided Derbyshire to promotion and recorded his highest score in first-class cricket to date – a mammoth 231 not out from 400 balls against Northamptonshire.
It was the 13th century of his first-class career and his second at Northamptonshire in three years. Madsen played with great control and patience, batting over three days whilst maintaining his intent to punish the poor deliveries that he faced. This incredible innings included 31 fours at a strike rate of 57.75.
Madsen completed his double hundred off 356 balls with a four through midwicket off Alex Wakely. Madsen and wicketkeeper Tom Poynton (106 runs from 212 balls) shared a ninth-wicket stand of 261 runs. This was the third-highest ninth-wicket stand in the history of first-class cricket as they fell 23 runs short of setting a new world record. Madsen finished unbeaten on 231 runs from 400 balls as Derbyshire was bowled out for 569 with a lead of 169 runs.
Highest Score in T20: 86 not out from 44 balls vs Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2017
An epic T20 game with a record domestic Vitality Blast gate of 14,123 in attendance at Trent Bridge. In a high scoring game, Madsen portrayed his all-round qualities by having the lowest economy rate with the ball in the match taking 2-32 from his four overs and top scoring for his team with a thrilling 86 not out from 44 balls. With Derbyshire chasing a demanding target of 228 in 20 overs, Madsen took his guard with the score 69-2 off 5.3 overs.
He smashed ten fours and four sixes to all parts of Trent Bridge as he always threatened to secure a victory for Derbyshire, scoring his half-century off only 29 balls and pushing on from there.
Needing six runs off the last ball to tie the game, Jake Ball held his nerve allowing Madsen to only score a single and leave his side just six runs short of their target.
Highest Score in List A: 138 runs from 127 balls vs Hampshire at The Incora County Ground in 2014
Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen scored a brilliant 138 runs from 127 balls against Hampshire at his home ground. Derbyshire was in some trouble as they slipped to 20-2 before Madsen and Wes Durston (134 runs from 129 balls) shared a massive record-breaking 222 run partnership in 214 balls.
Madsen scored fluently as he struck 16 fours and one six at a strike rate of 108.66. Madsen reached his century off 107 balls, bringing up the landmark with a hook for his 12th four. Madsen was dismissed by Matt Coles in the 47th over, guiding his team to 340-5 from their allotted 50 overs, their highest one-day total against another first-class county at the time.
