Getting to know: Zak Chappell

Wednesday 3rd August 2022
& News

Tall, quick and a threat with the ball across all formats, Zak Chappell has joined Derbyshire on a two-year deal, which will begin at the end of the current season.

Chappell began his career at Leicestershire, where he impressed as a developing fast bowler enough to earn England Lions recognition, touring India in early 2019, claiming 4-60 in a Test against India A.

His first-class debut came against Derbyshire in 2015, where he scored a career-best 96, but it is with the ball that Chappell made his name for the Foxes, taking 33 wickets in 14 red ball fixtures, including best figures of 6-44 against Northamptonshire in 2018, as well as 22 white ball dismissals.

It was the 2018 season where Chappell truly broke out, claiming 16 County Championship wickets at an average of just 15.93, highlighting his significant potential.

After coming through the Leicestershire academy and becoming a first team regular, Chappell joined Nottinghamshire on a three-year deal, where he found regular game time hard to come by, heading out for a series of loan spells at Gloucestershire, including a fruitful one this season.

In 2022, Chappell has claimed nine LV= County Championship wickets in just four Division One appearances, as well as claiming 11 Vitality Blast wickets at an average of just 11.90, for Gloucestershire and Notts Outlaws.

From the end of the 2022 season, Chappell will join up with Mickey Arthur’s Derbyshire squad, where he will become a key component of an exciting attack and, with regular game time, he’ll be hoping to build on his early promise to deliver success at The Incora County Ground.
