Brooke Guest says Derbyshire victory over Essex was a prime example of their positive approach to the white ball game.
Guest top-scored with 88, one of three half-centurions, and took four catches, as Derbyshire put in an excellent team performance to beat the hosts by 92 runs, the perfect response to a heavy defeat to Glamorgan earlier this week.
With another big clash against Lancashire on Sunday, Guest said the dominant nature of their win at the Cloud County Ground shows how the squad is developing, and how their brand of cricket under Mickey Arthur means they can compete with anyone.
“We spoke about it after the game on Tuesday that we needed to bounce back to be in the competition,” he said.
“I think we’ve shown that today. That’s the blueprint of how we want to play our one-day cricket. We bat first, set a big score and put the pressure on them from ball one.”
“We knew when I came in that we still had 35 overs left, so there was a lot of cricket still to be played. I think in modern-day cricket there’s no need to panic. We’ve got players who can bat lower down the order and like we saw today Mattie came in and playing a great innings, and we still had plenty of others in the shed who could still come in and do a job. I don’t think there was any need for any panic. It was just a case of rebuilding and getting a partnership going and get us to that big score.
“We knew with the short boundaries we could get 100 off the last 10 overs if we had wickets in hand, so it was just a case of making sure me and Mattie were still there with 10 overs to go. Then we could accelerate and put that 300 score on the board.
“It was nice to show we’ve got enough to compete against teams like Essex, who have been one of the best teams in county cricket for the last 5-10 years. It was nice to put a really good performance in against them.”
