Derbyshire Abroad: Arthur and Lakmal go head-to-head this week

Mickey Arthur and Suranga Lakmal will be in oposing camps on Thursday 8 December, as Dambulla Aura take on Colombo Stars in the Lanka Premier League. 

Head of Cricket, Arthur, signed a new three-year extension with Derbyshire last week and has now headed to Sri Lanka to take charge of Dambulla for the duration of the T20 competition, where he will coach the likes of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Haider Ali and Tom Abell.

Lakmal, who won both previous editions of the LPL with the Jaffna Kings, has joined Colombo after recovering from the elbow injury which forced him to miss much of the 2022 campaign with Derbyshire.

The legendary Sri Lankan fast-bowler, who sits in fourth-place in the list of Test wickets for the country, begins his LPL campaign begins at 2pm today (Tuesday) against Kandy, while Arthur’s Dambulla take on Jaffna on Wednesday (9:30am).

Mark Watt claimed 3-28 for Scotland, but they were defeated on Monday by Namibia in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture at Windhoek, having previously taken 2-19 to beat Nepal on Sunday.

The spinner, who will be available for Derbyshire in all formats in 2023, now sits in second-place on the list of leading ODI wicket-takers for Scotland, with 64 from 49 appearances.

Ajmal Shahzad’s stint coaching Delhi Bulls at the Abu Dhabi T10 came to a close with an exceptional bowling performance to beat Chennai Braves by 31 runs, to finish in fifth place. Derbyshire’s Assistant Coach (Bowling Lead) will join up with Multan Sultans for the Pakistan Super League in the new year.

In South Africa, Harry Came struck 31 as Claremont defeated Rylands CC, while in Australia Brooke Guest scored 38 for South Perth on Day One of their Western Australia Cricket Association First Grade fixture against Subiaco-Floreat.

Luis Reece will be aiming to guide Gosnells CC to victory against Mount Lawley this weekend, after the all-rounder took an early wicket on Day One of the game.

Mitch Wagstaff (28) and Archie Harrison (14) both featured for Corowa and Northern Districts CC respectively, with the latter also bowling well in a narrow defeat, while Harrison would claim 2-40 in a victory over Wests Illawarra Firsts.
