Interview: Arthur on Derbyshire Project

Friday 13th January 2023

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, spoke exclusively to DerbyshireTV to discuss the squad’s winter training regime, Derbyshire’s overseas recruitment and his vision for current project.

The experienced coach has been overseeing day-to-day sessions at The Incora County Ground and implementing a detailed pre-season programme, alongside his coaching team, as Derbyshire prepare for the upcoming 2023 summer.

Players including Brooke Guest, Leus du Plooy and Mark Watt are currently playing overseas, while Assistant Coach (Bowling Lead), Ajmal Shahzad, will be joining up with Multan Sultans next month for the Pakistan Super League, and Batting Consultant, Ian Bell, will be working with the England Lions for their tour of Sri Lanka.

With winter training well underway, Arthur is delighted what he’s regularly seeing from the players and believes Derbyshire are in a good place, with more progression to follow.

“The boys have been outstanding,” he said.

“The last couple of weeks, the training has really stepped up and the quality and intensity has been fantastic. We sit in a really good position, the new recruits have fitted in really well, so I don’t think we could be in a better place.

“Just coming out of the nets and seeing the culmination of another training week has been amazing.

“There’s so much room for growth, if we can keep developing these players, because I don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface and that’s really exciting.”

Another player who has been in action abroad is Suranga Lakmal, who Arthur was able to catch up with while both were at last month’s Lanka Premier League, in which the fast bowler finished as a runner-up with Colombo Stars.

Arthur has revealed that Lakmal will be back at The Incora County Ground in early February, to train with the squad prior to the new campaign, and the Head of Cricket also said he hopes the signing of a second overseas player is close.
