Derbyshire batter, Tom Wood, can’t wait to get the 2023 season started, after working to put a difficult 2022 behind him over the winter.
Wood missed much of the 2022 campaign through serving a six-month ban after a medical screening highlighted the prescribed use of a controlled substance, but returned to first team action to play in August to feature in three One-Day Cup fixtures.
This winter, the 28-year-old has enjoyed a full pre-season with the team and will feature in pre-season friendlies against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire at The Incora County Ground this month, with places up for grabs ahead of the start of the LV= County Championship season on Thursday 6 April.
The batter says he’s enjoying being a part of the group again, something he missed the most while serving his ban, and is looking to the future with optimism and ambition.
“First and foremost, I’m just grateful for the opportunity,” he said.
“This time last year, there was so much uncertainty and I didn’t know if I would ever play again, so to have that in the back of my mind, I’m grateful that I’m able to do what I love, train and have the opportunity to play, it’s super exciting.
“I think there’s a real excitement around the group, we’ve had a few new signings and we’ve got a good core together. Mickey [Arthur] has made it crystal clear that we’re not just here to compete this year, we want to win games. Not losing is not good enough for us anymore.
“There’s going to be a lot of competition for places and that’s what it’s all about, this is a performance-based industry and everybody is raring to go.”
