Derbyshire have named a 13-player squad for their final Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture against Somerset, starting tomorrow at The Incora County Ground.

Matt Lamb struck an unbeaten 63 in Derbyshire’s win over Northants Steelbacks on Sunday, the 14th score of 50 or more by a Derbyshire player in the competition this year, and the batting unit will be looking to end the white ball campaign on a high against Somerset.

With the ball, 16-year-old Harry Moore became Derbyshire’s youngest ever debutant and wicket-taker against Worcestershire Rapids, and he followed that up with another wicket against Northants. He and fellow Cricket Derbyshire Academy graduate, Sam Conners, performed well with the new ball on Sunday, with the latter claiming 3-32.

Derbyshire Squad:

12. Haider Ali
10. Luis Reece
04. Harry Came
29. Brooke Guest (c/wk)
24. Tom Wood
07. Matt Lamb
65. Anuj Dal
33. Mitch Wagstaff
15. Alex Thomson
21. Mattie McKiernan
51. Mark Watt
59. Sam Conners
2. Harry Moore

The Opposition

Somerset are second from bottom in Group B, level on points with Derbyshire but with an inferior net run rate, after seven games in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Opener Andrew Umeed has scored 441 runs at an average of 63 in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, including two centuries and two half-centuries, while with the ball, Jack Brookes’ eight wickets puts him top of the Somerset charts.

Pre-Match Talk

Matt Lamb says Derbyshire are under no illusions about their disappointing 2023 season so far, but believes improvements between now and the end of the campaign can provide a good platform for the future.
Lamb, who has struggled for consistent game time this season due to a persistent back issue, scored an unbeaten 63 as Derbyshire defeated Northants Steelbacks on Sunday, their second win in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
While the results across all formats have not been what was hoped for this season, Lamb says the squad will be fighting to put in improved performances and build momentum to take into the winter.
“We’ve had a talk about how we need to change how we go about things,” he said.
“It’s been a really disappointing season and as players, we’ve got to take responsibility for that. There’s still a lot to play for in the next four or five weeks to build momentum to take into next season.
“We’ve all discussed the kind of culture we want to create, how we want to approach the game, and this next few weeks will be a really good sounding board, so that we can implement what we’ve talked about.”
