Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, believes the additions Derbyshire have made for 2024, coupled with some promising signs at the end of this campaign, will put the team in a better place next year.
Having been on top in each of their final three LV= County Championship games of 2023, a combination of weather and stout opposition resistance prevented Derbyshire from picking up a first red ball win of the campaign, despite strong showings from the likes of Luis Reece, Mitch Wagstaff, Anuj Dal and Alex Thomson.
Derbyshire have already confirmed the signings of David Lloyd, Pat Brown and Mohammad Amir for next season, with more announcements likely to follow over the next few weeks.
Arthur has previously spoken about next season being a huge one, as he will have signed or chosen to retain every player within the squad, and he believes the group of players that will line up in 2024 will have a good chance to put things right, after a frustrating campaign this time around.
“It’s very disappointing we haven’t won all summer. I told the boys in the dressing room we have to improve in so many facets,” he said.
“We have refreshed the squad with seven new faces, which s quite a big turn over. We feel every one of them will help us and make us a better team, we’ll have two players for every position and that’s where you want to be as a squad. We’ve created depth.
“Individually we’ve been OK, with two players scoring more than 1,000 runs (in the County Championship) and another getting very close. We have taken the most amount of bowling points in Division 2, we just haven’t been able to take 20 wickets in a game.
“There have been so many good things, although collectively we haven’t put it together. That’s something we need to work on and improve in every department.”
