Derbyshire are thrilled to announce the signing of Samit Patel from Nottinghamshire on a two-year contract.  Here, we take a look at Samit’s career so far.

The experienced all-rounder has represented England on 60 occasions across all the three formats, scoring 822 runs and claiming 38 wickets in a career spanning from 2008 to 2015.  His best international success came in ODIs, with the experienced left-armer claiming best figures of 5-41 and registering one half-century at an average of 32.13.

Samit made his T20 debut in the inaugural season of 2003, with Ravi Bopara and Tim Murtagh being the only other players from that year to still be playing this summer.  Over his 20-year T20 career, the all-rounder has a high score of 90 not out and remarkable best bowling figures of 4-5 off four overs.   In the 2021 campaign, Samit was named the PCA’s Vitality Blast Player of the Year, and he also became the first English player to take 250 wickets and score 5,000 runs in T20s.  He is only the fifth man to ever achieve this accolade.

In more recent years, Samit has plied his trade across the globe in various countries and white-ball leagues.  He has had stints in the franchise tournaments in Australia, Bangladesh, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and also in the United Arab Emirates.

Samit played major roles in Nottinghamshire’s white-ball success in 2017, as his side won the One-Day and T20 trophies in the same campaign.  Most notably, he won Player-of-the-Match in the T20 final, scoring 64 off 42 balls.  He also smashed an unbeaten 122 in the One-Day Cup semi-final as Nottinghamshire pulled off a record chase before eventually winning the tournament.  On the back of this, he claimed three end of season awards: Nottinghamshire Player of the Year, Professional Cricket Association’s Most Valuable Player and the PCA Player of the Year.

Samit added another T20 title to his accolades in 2020, to go with winning the County Championship in 2005 and 2010, as well as success in The Hundred for Trent Rockets in 2022, where he claimed 13 dismissals.

Welcome to Derbyshire, Samit!
