With our 80’s Bash event less than a month away, we take a look at just some of the biggest hits from one of music’s most prolific eras, which will be performed at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, on Friday 28 June.
The West End’s biggest stars will be putting their spin on classics from Queen, ABBA, Lionel Richie, WHAM! and many more, as the BRM Chesterfield Festival of Cricket gets started in style.
Here, we take a look at a few of the songs which will be performed and the stories behind them,
I Want to Break Free – Queen
Released in 1984, Queen’s powerful hit has stood the test of time and remains a popular song to this day, with the double-platinum single having sold more than 1,200,000 copies. It also reached number three in the UK charts. It’s fitting that Queen’s Park will be carrying the sound of one of Freddie Mercury’s greatest performances.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cindi Lauper
An upbeat hit you can really let your hair down to, Cindi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ is sure to get those dancing feet moving in Chesterfield this month! Lauper’s first major single, it became one of the most recognisable hits of the decade.
One quirk of the song is that WWE Hall of Famer, Captain Lou Albano, features in the music video and Lauper would go on to appear at the very first Wrestlemania event in 1985, being widely credited as key to the promotion breaking into the mainstream.
Hello – Lionel Richie
Ironic, considering the title, but this classic hit requires no introduction. Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’ is an iconic track, which reached number one in ten different countries, including the United Kingdon and the U.S.
The single has sold more than 2,000,000 copies worldwide and we cannot wait to hear it performed in Chesterfield on Friday 28 June.
Summer of 69 – Bryan Adams
Has there ever been a better soundtrack to a hot summer night than Bryan Adams’ ‘Summer of 69’? If there is, we’re yet to hear it!
A rock classic, this 1985 hit is sure to get the whole crowd singing along and dancing to the huge riffs, as the West End’s best take us on a journey in this reflective track, which is certified as quadruple platinum in the UK.
Chain Reaction – Diana Ross
Look up the word ‘ballad’ in the dictionary and you would not be surprised to find the definition to be the lyrics to this huge hit, which charted number one in the UK in 1986.
The song was penned by the Bee Gees and is full of energy and powerful vocals, ‘Chain Reaction’ is regarded as one of the biggest hits of the decade and cemented Ross as a true legend of her craft.
