Derbyshire have named a 12-player squad for the Vitality County Championship fixture against Glamorgan at The County Ground tomorrow (11am).

Left-arm spinner Jack Morley returns to Derbyshire on an initial two-match loan, covering for the injured Alex Thomson (side strain). Morley claimed three wickets on his sole appearance for the Club against Sussex in May.

Matt Lamb (calf) and Sam Conners (hamstring) are sidelined due to injuries picked up during the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, while Harry Moore is rested, as the Club manages his workloads.

After the conclusion of The Hundred, Pat Brown, Aneurin Donald and Wayne Madsen all return to the matchday squad, while Ross Whiteley remains absent while he features for Grand Cayman Jaguars in the Max60 Cayman Islands tournament.

Derbyshire Squad:

04. Harry Came
08. Daryn Dupavillon
10. Luis Reece
12. Aneurin Donald
18. Jack Morley
26. Nick Potts
29. Brooke Guest (wk)
32. Zak Chappell
36. Pat Brown
46. David Lloyd (c)
65. Anuj Dal
77. Wayne Madsen

The Opposition

Glamorgan sit fifth in the table, having won once and drawn six times so far in the County Championship.

Left-handed batter Colin Ingram tops Glamorgan’s batting averages, having scored 752 runs at an average of 94. Both Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson have also had good campaigns so far, having scored 902 runs and 618 runs respectively.

Mason Crane has claimed 24 first-class wickets this season but Dutch seamer Timm van der Gugten has particularly impressed since coming back from injury, claiming 17 wickets in three matches at an average of 20.88.

Pre-Match Talk

All-rounder Luis Reece believes Derbyshire can take positives from their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign into their final five Vitality County Championship fixtures.

Reece was ever-present in the 50-over competition, in which Derbyshire narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stages due to net run-rate, starring in dominant wins over Middlesex and Lancashire.

As the squad looks towards the final set of red ball fixtures this season, Reece is confident their recent exploits in the shorter format can be translated into Championship cricket.

The left-handed batter said: “We played some decent cricket in the One-Day competition and we know we can play even better. We’ve started to find performances and team spirit where we’ve won games from so far behind the eight ball which is quite refreshing. When you can win games that you feel you should lose, that gives us a load of confidence moving forwards.

“We’ve got five games here to turn our red ball season around and we’re not looking too far ahead, it’s just about can whether we can start playing the type of cricket that’s going to get us positive results – and results to get us where we want to be in the table.

“The lads are disappointed with how we’ve gone in the red ball stuff so far, but there’s five opportunities to bring some enjoyment and smiles to our fans’ faces which is what they deserve.

“The lads have started to do that now and that sense of belief in each other came in the One Day competition, we saw games won when we were down and out. That’s a very powerful thing that was maybe lacking in the first half of the season.

“We always put pressure on ourselves, we always want to win every game and be the match-winner but I think going into this block it’s that belief in each other and the realisation that the squad has some seriously good players that given their chance, will take it.”

Having scored four centuries against Glamorgan last season, including an unbeaten double century in Derby at The County Ground, the batter was asked whether that is something that sits at the back of his mind: “You know what it isn’t! Blokes keep reminding me, but it’s unrealistic to think every time you’ll score a hundred.

“It’s a new game and they’ve got some good players. I feel like I’ve been in good spot for most of the year and find random ways of getting out which has been hugely frustrating.

“Hopefully I’ll go on a good run soon and if Glamorgan are that catalyst then great but the key thing for me is I just want to win a four day game of cricket. We’re all desperate to do that, we all want that win and when you get that monkey off your back, then hopefully wins come like London buses.

“It’s not something I think about but it’s something I can draw a little bit of confidence from having done it against this opposition, and I’ll be doing my best to try and put in a performance that puts us in a great position.”
