Derbyshire have signed Australian opening batter, Caleb Jewell, for the full 2025 season.
Jewell, 27, is highly-rated in his home nation, having scored 2,455 first-class runs, including six centuries and a high-score of 227, which came in a Sheffield Shield fixture against Western Australia in February of this year.
The left-handed batter has also compiled more than 2,200 runs across the white ball formats, with four List A centuries and five T20 half-centuries to his name.
He reached the final of the 2023/2024 Sheffield Shield with Tasmania, for whom he will represent in the upcoming Australian domestic season, while he will play for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash.
Jewell will be available for Derbyshire in all formats in 2025, becoming the Club’s second addition for the new campaign, having already agreed a permanent deal with all-rounder, Martin Andersson.
Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “Caleb is a player I’ve had my eye on for some time, and everyone I have spoken to about him has said just what a good player he is. Chief Selector for Cricket Australia, George Bailey, and Ian Bell, in particular, spoke very highly of his ability.
“We have recognised that our batting lineup needed reinforcement, across all formats, and having Caleb here for the full season will allow us to build that consistency we need. He will bring real grit to the top of the order.”
Jewell added: “I’m looking forward to getting my first taste of county cricket with Derbyshire, to show what I can do in all formats and help the Club win matches.
“There are plenty of Australian players who have made their mark in England, and I want to be next. I’m excited to work with the coaching setup at Derbyshire, to take my game to the next level, and play alongside the quality group of players at the Club.”
