Derbyshire batter, Matt Lamb, has retired from professional cricket due to injury.

Lamb, 28, spent much of his career with Warwickshire, where he won the County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy in 2021 and scored three first-class centuries.

He joined Derbyshire in 2023, but struggled for consistent game time due to persistent back injuries, before he was ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 campaign in August.

He struck a career-high 207 against Gloucestershire in May 2024, while he also won the 2023 Eddie Barlow Inspirational Performance Award for his battling match-winning half-century against Northants, while playing through back pain.

Following assessment and management from Derbyshire’s medical team, Lamb has taken the decision to step away from professional cricket, he will continue to receive support from the Club, as well as the Professional Cricketers’ Association, as he moves into his post-playing career.

Lamb said: “This is not how any player wants their career to end, but I have to consider what’s best for me long-term, and I simply cannot play to the standard required with the injury issues I have been dealing with.

“I’ve enjoyed every moment of my career and been fortunate to experience so many great moments, I would have loved to have contributed more to Derbyshire in the future, but I will always be looking out for their results.

“I’d like to thank the Club for their support, as well as the Members and supporters, who have always made me feel at home with Derbyshire.”

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, added: “It’s a real shame for Matt’s career to come to an end through injury, he has worked incredibly hard to try to get himself up to match fitness, but unfortunately it’s just not been possible.

“Matt has always been a great professional for us, he’s played some really good knocks and he will be missed within our dressing room. We as a Club will continue to support him and wish him the very best for the future.”
