Billy Godleman hit his first century of the season, whilst Wayne Madsen hit his third, as the pair put on a 251-run partnership that ensured Derbyshire enjoyed much the better of Day Two versus Worcestershire at Derby.
Their third-wicket partnership of 251 is the Club’s highest versus Worcestershire in first-class cricket, as Madsen scored his 21st Championship century for Derbyshire, and Godleman ended the day unbeaten on 157 which is his highest score to date.
At stumps, Derbyshire were 319-3 after the superb stand between Godleman and Madsen had lasted over two sessions and put the hosts in control going into the third day.
The hosts lost Hamish Rutherford (5) and Chesney Hughes (0) within the fourth over of the day having been asked to bat first, which brought Madsen to the crease to join his Captain.
The pair battled hard during a tough morning session to ensure the hosts reached lunch without further damage on 66-2.
After the lunch interval, Madsen and Godleman increased the run-rate significantly, and both reached their half-century. Godleman took 11 balls to reach 50, whilst Madsen took 135 deliveries.
Godleman continued to press on to ensure he reached his hundred before the session was out. Derbyshire’s Captain brought up his first century of the campaign by striking the 177th ball he faced for six.
At tea, Derbyshire were in a dominant position on 214-2, having scored 148 runs in the afternoon session without losing a wicket and seen Godleman and Madsen accumulate a double-hundred partnership for the third wicket – the county’s highest against this opposition.
Madsen’s 21st first-class century for Derbyshire came up shortly after tea, having faced 214 balls, as he and Godleman got to their 250-run partnership.
He would, however, only add a further nine to his total for the innings, before he was third man out, caught behind off Jack Shantry with Derbyshire on 264-3 and already having secured a second batting bonus point.
That brought Broom to the crease and, after a steady start, he played his shots, including two perfectly-timed cover drives in an over, to finish the day on 28 not out.
Godleman, meanwhile, was unbeaten on 157 – his highest score in first-class cricket – when the hosts ended a prosperous day on 319-3.
