Derbyshire are thrilled to announce the signing of Ross Whiteley from Hampshire on a two-year contract. Here, we take a look at Ross’ career so far.
The hard-hitting left-hander and outstanding fielder comes back to where his career started, having won various trophies at different clubs in the time in between.
Whiteley re-joins Derbyshire, having made his professional debut here in September 2008. He became a first-team regular in 2011 and then hit the winning runs a season later, a six, as Derbyshire were crowned County Championship Division Two champions in 2012.
Whiteley moved to Worcestershire in the 2013 season, where he achieved more domestic success, this time in the white ball format. The left-hander won the 2018 Vitality Blast with the Rapids, alongside another Derbyshire signing for 2024, Pat Brown.
Whiteley achieved the incredible feat of striking six sixes in an over, back in 2016, in a Blast game against Yorkshire. He joined the elite list of batters to have accomplished this, alongside players such as Sir Garfield Sobers and Yuvraj Singh.
Whiteley would move to another county, Hampshire, at the end of 2021. The following year, he played in every match as Hampshire Hawks won the 2022 Vitality Blast. His move to Derbyshire sees a link back up with fellow ex-Hampshire player, Aneurin Donald.
The left-hander’s domestic exploits have seen him drafted in two major overseas franchise tournaments. Whiteley was selected by Multan Sultans in the 2018 Pakistan Super League, before being picked up by Brisbane Heat in last year’s Big Bash in Australia.
Whiteley has also achieved success in The Hundred, having won the tournament twice, in the first and third editions, with Southern Brave and Oval Invincibles, respectively.
Whiteley returns to Derbyshire having gained a wealth of experience in the game and adds to Mickey Arthur’s squad’s experience, talent and depth across all formats.
