Local school children meet Derbyshire players

Over 400 school children had the chance to meet and chat with professional players of both Derbyshire and Northamptonshire at the Custom Solar Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council this week.

Due to a saturated outfield, unfortunately no play was possible on any of the first four days of the annual week-long festival.

Despite the weather ruling out any play, children from schools from Chesterfield and the surrounding areas have been at the ground over the last four days and they have had the unique opportunity to get up close with both sets of players.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “Our ground staff have worked tirelessly all week to try and deal with the waterlogged ground but, due to the nature of the site and the amount of rain that has fallen in recent weeks, the games have unfortunately not been able to go ahead as planned.

“While it is very disappointing for us and the businesses of the town that benefit from the extra trade the cricket festival creates we all look forward to the return of the festival next year.

“We are pleased that despite the games not going ahead more than 400 school children were still able to meet and be inspired by the players as part of the partnership between the cricket club and the council to promote health and well-being among young people.”

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and well-being said: “One of our top priorities is to improve the health and well-being of people in the borough.

“Each year, the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket gives local youngsters the chance to learn more about county cricket first hand as well as the chance to take part themselves and meet some of their sporting heroes.

“Hopefully, this will inspire them to take part in sport and fitness and lead healthier lifestyles as they grow up.”
