Will Davis claimed seven wickets in the first innings, but Glamorgan’s bowlers dominated the second day of the Specsavers County Championship fixture at Colwyn Bay.
Davis returned figures of 7-146, a career-best and the best figures by a Derbyshire bowler this summer, as the hosts were dismissed for 518 inside the first hour.
After a quick start to the reply, the Glamorgan bowlers took over to dismiss Derbyshire for 177 at the stroke of tea. Craig Meschede was the pick of the bowlers with 3-33, while Harvey Hosein top scored with an unbeaten 27.
The hosts enforced the follow-on and Derbyshire closed the day on 78-1, still trailing by 263 runs.
Davis, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul on the opening day, was once again in the wickets on the second morning, claiming the final two to take his innings tally to seven.
Glamorgan, resuming on 482-8, were dismissed for 518 with Owen Morgan (40) and Michael Hogan (7) then men to go. Craig Meschede was unbeaten on 66.
Davis’ seven-wicket haul was only the seventh by a Derbyshire paceman this century and, at the age of 20, he became the second youngest bowler to claim seven in an innings for the county.
Derbyshire started brightly in their reply with Hamish Rutherford (26) and Billy Godleman (24), with both batsmen trading boundaries, before the Rutherford was first out with the visitors 52-1.
That signalled a difficult period as Derbyshire slipped to 71-4 at lunch, with Meschede (3-33) claiming three wickets.
Wickets continued to fall after the restart, with former Derbyshire man Graham Wagg (2-51) taking two before spinner Andrew Salter (2-15) also picked up two.
Matt Critchley (23) and Harvey Hosein (27*) offered some late resistance, but the visitors were dismissed for 177 all out just before tea, trailing first-innings by 341.
Asked to follow-on, Hosein then opened the batting in the absence of Godleman due to illness. He and Rutherford added 59 for the first wicket until Hosein was the only man out for 26.
Derbyshire closed the day on 78-1, with Rutherford 32 not out and Chesney Hughes 12 not out, needing 264 runs to make Glamorgan bat again.
