Derbyshire Second XI claimed a thrilling victory at Repton yesterday, beating Durham by two wickets.
There were half-centuries in the match for Harry Came, Mitch Wagstaff and most notably Harry Moore, who struck 64 off 68 balls to guide the side to victory.
Whiteley elected to bowl first as Durham were dismissed for 300, with the captain claiming figures of 4 for 16 with his left-arm bowling.
Came (67) and Wagstaff (32) shared 71 for the first wicket as the hosts eventually reached 226 for 5, before Whiteley decided to declare the innings in a push for victory.
At one stage in their second innings Durham were 89 for 6 and looking in danger of being bowled out cheaply. Sam Conners and Alex Thomson both claimed three wickets each as Durham’s number eight Callum Gaffney hit 60 to help his side to 218 all out, and set Derbyshire a target of 293 for victory.
Opener Wagstaff hit 63 off 72 balls in pursuit of the target but when he fell with the score 96 for 4, the chase looked in doubt.
Whiteley (36) and Thomson (44) shared 80 for the next wicket but when both men were out in the 39th over there were still 116 runs needed for victory.
In walked Moore at number eight and the 17-year-old proceeded to hit nine fours and two sixes to marshal the chase back in favour of Derbyshire.
The right-hander looked extremely composed at the crease, cutting Ollie Gibson for two fours in the 60th over to seal the Second XI’s first victory of the season.
