Derbyshire Second XI gained the upper hand on Day One of their friendly with Glamorgan, thanks to five wickets from Callum Parkinson.

Parkinson claimed figures of 5-64 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 287, despite 126 from their Captain, Neil Brand.

The Derbyshire openers, S Kershaw (4*) and Ryan Bramwell (7*) safely negotiated the rest of the day to leave Derbyshire 14-0 at the close, trailing by 273.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Derbyshire’s made a tight start, Ben Cotton returning economical figures of 1-18 from his 11 overs.

Derbyshire’s seam bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, Greg Cork (2-44) and Rob Hemmings (1-29) accounted for three of Glamorgan’s top order batsmen.

The introduction of spin was key, with Parkinson and Matt Critchley (1-83) taking the final six wickets of the Glamorgan innings.

Despite regular wickets falling, Glamorgan’s captain Brand was unfazed and continued to frustrate the Derbyshire bowlers, batting with seven different partners during his innings of 126.

Contributions from Andrew Salter (39) and Jack Murphy (40) supported Brand, whose knock came from 229 balls with six fours and one six.

Parkinson eventually took the wicket of Brand, having him caught and bowled before Glamorgan were dismissed for 287, giving Derbyshire seven overs to bat before the close of play.

Derbyshire finished the day on 14-0, leaving them in a good position to build a first innings lead on Day Two.
