Will Davis claimed four wickets on Day Two of Derbyshire’s Specsavers County Championship game with Leicestershire at The 3aaa County Ground.
Davis returned figures of 4-60, with Tony Palladino and Callum Parkinson taking two each after Derbyshire were dismissed for 307 earlier in the day.
Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove was unbeaten on 81 before play ended prematurely due to bad light, with the visitors 228-8, trailing Derbyshire’s first innings total by 79 runs.
Derbyshire resumed the day on 282-8, with Hosein already on a career-best score of 79 not out, and potentially closing in on a maiden first-class century.
However, Parkinson (8) was the wicket to fall in the day when he edged Clint McKay (2-50) behind to Ned Eckersley who claimed his fifth catch of the innings.
Coming in at number 11, Davis stayed with Hosein for a while, but Hosein was unable to reach his hundred as Davis was caught at short leg off the bowling of Charlie Shreck (4-78) for 15, leaving Hosein stranded on 83 not out, and Derbyshire 307 all out.
In reply, Leicestershire lost Angus Robson early, when Palladino (2-27) trapped the opener lbw for a duck.
Derbyshire took two more wickets before lunch to have the better of the morning session, as Davis had Paul Horton caught behind for 19, and Parkinson (2-71) dismissed Neil Dexter for 14 with his first ball of the innings.
Cosgrove rebuilt the visitors’ innings in a partnership of 93 for the fourth wicket with Eckersley, who was lbw to Palladino for 27, leaving the score 137-4.
32-year-old Cosgrove reached his fifty from 58 balls, but was then forced to retire hurt with a hand injury unbeaten on 77.
First-class debutant, Harry Dearden, was next to fall, caught behind by Hosein off the bowling of Parkinson for 13.
Clint McKay added a few big hits to push the score along, but he was caught by Alex Hughes off Davis for 21, and Pettini followed in the same fashion in the same over, also caught by Hughes at deep square leg for 44.
Cosgrove returned to the crease but was running out of partners as Davis claimed another, Rob Sayer departing for a duck, caught by Neil Broom at backward square leg.
Leicestershire reached 228-8 before, like on the previous evening, the light became too dark and the players were taken from the field, with the visitors trailing by 79 runs.
