Derbyshire players Neil Broom, Ben Slater, Alex Hughes, Luis Reece and Matt Critchley are all playing cricket abroad this winter. We catch up to see how they are getting on.

Neil Broom

Batsman Neil Broom, who will return to the Club in 2017, is once again playing for the Otago Volts after agreeing to be their overseas player for the 2016/17 season, after playing for Derbyshire as a UK qualified player last season.

In their second fixture of their first-class campaign, Broom was once again in fine form after hitting 93 in their season opener, scoring his 18th first-class century to lead the way with 161. The knock included 20 fours and three sixes.

In total, Broom has now scored 317 runs in two fixtures in New Zealand this winter, at an average of 106.

Ben Slater / Alex Hughes

Ben Slater and Alex Hughes have both made good contributions for Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League in recent weeks.

Opening batsman Slater scored his first century for the club, hitting 105 against Dandenong in his side’s 193 all out.

Hughes, meanwhile, produced a match-winning contribution the following week against Northcote, hitting 47 with the bat before claiming his first hat-trick of his career on the way to figures of 5-45.

Luis Reece

New signing Luis Reece, who has signed a two-year deal with Derbyshire, is playing for Gosnells Cricket Club in the First Grade of cricket in the Western Australia Cricket Association, having played for them previously during his time at Lancashire.

The all-rounder has claimed seven wickets with his left-arm medium pace in his last two fixtures, returning figures of 3-20 and 4-31, both in winning causes.

Matt Critchley

As part of the ECB’s men’s International Pathway, leg-spinner Matt Critchley was awarded an Overseas Placement in Australia and is playing for Randwick-Petersham Cricket Club in the New South Wales Premier League.

In the first innings of their current fixture, Critchley returned figures of 1-52 off 14 overs.
