Derbyshire return to The Central Co-op County Ground, Derby for a local derby against Nottinghamshire in their third fixture in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Heritage Officer David Griffin previews the fixture.

These two counties face each for the 64th time in one day cricket – only Lancashire, Yorkshire and Northamptonshire have been Derbyshire’s opponents more often in this form of the game – with Nottinghamshire having dominated proceedings with 40 wins to Derbyshire’s 21 and two of the games falling foul of the weather.

The last time the sides met was in 2021 when Derbyshire ended Nottinghamshire’s eight game winning streak with a 41 run victory which owed much to Tom Wood’s magnificent 109 which included a hundred off 55 balls, now the fourth fastest for Derbyshire, although the second fastest at the time.

Derbyshire’s highest score against Nottinghamshire of 303 for four at Derby in 2017 was not enough to win the game as rain intervened and Nottinghamshire successfully chased a revised target of 286.

Nottinghamshire’s highest total of 340 for seven secured a 65 run win at Welbeck in 2016.

Five Derbyshire players have scored hundreds against Nottinghamshire with Chris Adams’ 121 at Nottingham in 1997 topping the list; the other centurions are Chris Bassano, Matthew Cassar, Billy Godleman and Wood.

Nottinghamshire batters have registered nine hundreds against Derbyshire with Chris Broad scoring two of them and James Taylor making the highest of 146 not out at Trent Bridge in 2014.

Two Derbyshire bowlers have taken five Nottinghamshire wickets in a one day match – Mike Hendrick recording remarkable figures of six for seven at Trent Bridge in 1972 and five for 30 at Chesterfield in 1975. Phil Russell took five for 54 at Nottingham in 1974.

The best figures for Nottinghamshire of five for 43 were recorded by one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the game; Garry Sobers was the star performer at Chesterfield in 1969.

Only three Derbyshire bowlers have taken a one day hat trick and the most recent came in the quarter final of the NatWest Trophy at Derby in 1987 when Martin Jean-Jacques dismissed Richard Hadlee, John Birch and Bruce French.
