Charlie Macdonell hit 58, while Tom Milnes claimed two wickets, as Derbyshire competed in their first pre-season friendly of 2017 against a North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Select XI.

The friendly fixture at Moddershall Cricket Club was reduced to 40 overs. Macdonell hit the first half-century of the summer, top scoring with 58, while Shiv Thakor hit 40 and Wayne Madsen added 28, as Derbyshire posted 207-9 from their 40 overs.

Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby fast bowler Dan Gibbs was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, claiming 3-20 off seven overs.

Paceman Tom Milnes (2-34) claimed two early wickets in reply, before Tom Taylor (1-32) claimed a third to reduce the hosts to 44-3 after 11 overs.

But a 165-run partnership between John Hancock (88 not out) and Dan Brierley (80 not out) guided the Premier League Select XI to victory with 10 balls to spare.

Derbyshire begin the new season on Friday away at Loughborough University, before starting their Specsavers County Championship campaign on Friday 14 April versus Northamptonshire at The 3aaa County Ground.

Derbyshire XI: Macdonell, Milnes, Thakor, Madsen, Hughes, Hosein, Milnes, Wood, Critchley, Taylor, Davis.
