Fast bowler Hardus Viljoen will miss the opening Specsavers County Championship fixture versus Northamptonshire following a recurrence of a previous injury in training.

The 26-year-old, who was set to make his Derbyshire debut this week, aggravated a previous injury in training on Wednesday and failed a fitness test to be available for the season opener at The 3aaa County Ground.

He will now be monitored by the Club’s medical staff, with a view to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible.

Captain Billy Godleman said: “It’s a shame for Hardus as I know he was desperate to play, but together we felt that it was a risk to play him this week.

“But we have a squad for a reason and it’s full of quality players who can come in and do a good job. We’re looking forward to getting the new season underway and starting in a positive way.”
