A giant white cricket ball was on display at The 3aaa County Ground at the Club’s opening home NatWest T20 Blast fixture in 2015 to signify our intention for Derby to be a host city for the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup.
The giant cricket ball, manufactured by Briggs of Burton, was in place in time for the fixture versus Lancashire Lightning on Friday 29 May, which was televised live to a global audience by Sky Sports.
At the start of April, the Club announced its intention to bid for Derby to become a host city for the Women’s World Cup in England in 2017. As part of the announcement, the Club unveiled plans for a landmark set of giant cricket stumps to be located at the gateway of the City on the Pentagon Roundabout.
The stumps will be funded by 100 local businesses and private donors who will each pledge £500 to become part of the #WereBackingTheBid campaign and be involved in the development, unveiling and publicity surrounding the sculpture as well as featuring on a Partners Plaque.
Derbyshire Chief Executive, Simon Storey said: “The giant stumps demonstrate our commitment – together with our partners – to the City of Derby as a great place to live, work, enjoy sport and as a great destination for visitors from across the world.
“The giant ball, manufactured by stainless steel specialist Briggs of Burton, is the first phase in this ambitious project.
“It was a signal to the bidding panel and the global TV audience that we are committed to a successful Women’s World Cup in 2017 and building a long-lasting legacy for the growth of the game in Derbyshire.
“With the business community coming together to deliver the giant stumps, we will be in an exceptionally strong position to demonstrate that the whole City is behind the ICC Women’s World Cup when the opportunity to submit our bid arrives later this year.”
