Alex Hughes hit a well-made 47 but Derbyshire face a tough test after being bowled out for 164 on Day Two of the Specsavers County Championship match versus Durham at Emirates Riverside.
Durham resumed on 376-7 and led by Captain Paul Collingwood, added 104 runs before declaring on 480-9. The Derbyshire reply stuttered from the off as the visitors were bowled out for 164 before bad light brought an end to the day’s play.
The hosts started steadily and claimed maximum batting points in the opening 30 minutes of the day, shortly before Collingwood moved past 150 with a drive off Imran Tahir. He was eventually out to Hardus Viljoen, who claimed a maiden five-wicket haul for Derbyshire, caught by Tahir for 177, ending a Club-record stand with Matty Potts.
When Chris Rushworth was bowled by Tahir in the following over, Collingwood declared with his side in control on 480-9, leaving Derbyshire four overs to bat until lunch.
Despite surviving until lunch, Derbyshire got off to a poor start in their reply, Reece (6) and Godleman (2) out for single figures, the Captain losing his off stump facing Rushworth. Wayne Madsen followed shortly after and with Derbyshire 41-3, the hosts were firmly in control after a good first half of the day.
Ben Slater (29) and Hughes began to recover and the pair added 23 for the fourth wicket until the opener was caught at second slip by Tom Latham off Graham Onions for 29. The tea interval came with the wicket of Matt Critchley, lbw to Rushworth and Derbyshire in trouble on 97-5.
Once Hughes was out ten overs later, hopes of a revival were extinguished and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, Tony Palladino (4) and Harvey Hosein (12) both out with the runs column on 129. Viljoen became Onions’ fourth wicket, a third catch behind the stumps for Michael Richardson as the score slumped to 140-9.
Tahir expressed himself in adding 18 in a tenth wicket partnership with Podmore, but once the on-loan Middlesex bowler was caught by Collingwood, Derbyshire were all out for 164 at the close of play, a first innings deficit of 316.
