Captain Billy Godleman praised the resilience of his side in the second innings against Durham, but admits they let the hosts pile on far too many runs on Day One, ultimately resulting in a nine-wicket defeat.
Durham completed victory on the final morning after dismissing Derbyshire for 354, setting a chase of 39 runs to win. Luis Reece had earlier hit 106 and Hardus Viljoen claimed a maiden five-wicket haul for the Club, but Godleman believes a lot of damage was done in Durham’s first innings.
He said: “We inserted Durham in bowling friendly conditions in the first hour both Hardus [Viljoen] and Harry [Podmore] bowled very well, but I think it’s safe to say for the five hours after that we let them get too many.
“370 runs in a day was miles too many on that wicket and on Day Two it was tough conditions to bat in with the lights on for most of the day and they had a highly experienced bowling attack in their own conditions.
“I’m really proud of the resilience that the guys showed in the last 48 hours, some of the other guys put their hand up with the bat and it was impressive how long they stayed in on that surface.
Despite the loss, there were positives to take from the game, including Reece’s second first-class century of the campaign and Viljoen’s first innings figures of 5-130.
Godleman added: “Reece made a fantastic hundred and it has been coming for a while now. I’m really pleased for him as I know how hard he has worked.
“And for Hardus, to have him to go from not playing at all to not only taking wickets but bowling lots of overs as a strike bowler is really important to us.”
