Matt Critchley made his England Lions debut on Tuesday night, as West Indies A claimed a narrow five-run win in the first one-day fixture of the series in Antigua.

Critchley becomes the first Derbyshire player to represent an England senior side since Dominic Cork in 2002.

The all-rounder, who earned a call-up after impressing on his ECB Overseas Placement in Sydney, bowled eight overs on debut, returning 0-41, and scored nine with the bat, but West Indies A prevailed at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.

After losing the toss and bowling first, England Lions reduced the hosts to 98-3, with the experienced Roston Chase and Kieran Powell falling early.

Jermaine Blackwood made 99 in partnerships with Andre McCarthy (33) and Rahkeem Cornwall (44) as Critchley came on to bowl. He bowled a tidy spell, returning figures of 0-41 from eight. West Indies A were all out for 272 in the final over.

Nick Gubbins (54) and Sam Hain led the England chase, but wickets fell at regular intervals to restrict England to 93-6, before Critchley came in at eight and added nine until he was caught behind. Hain was the last man out for a well-made 144 as the Lions were all out for 267 in 49.4 overs, falling six runs short of their target.

The second one-day fixture takes place on Friday 9 March, with the Lions looking to level the series ahead of the final match on Sunday.
