Duanne Olivier took 5-20 as Derbyshire dismissed Durham for 96 as 18 wickets fell on the opening day against Durham at Emirates Riverside.
The South Africa international claimed his first five-wicket haul for the county, while Hardus Viljoen took 3-30, as Durham were blown away shortly after lunch on the first day.
Wayne Madsen hit 36 and Matt Critchley scored 38 in reply, but Durham responded in the final session taking six wickets to stall the visitors’ progress.
An unbeaten 40-run stand between Tony Palladino (23 not out) and Alfie Gleadall (12 not out), however, ensured Derbyshire ended the day in the ascendancy on 175-8, a lead of 79 runs.
It was a dominate display by the Derbyshire bowlers, led by new ball pair Olivier and Viljoen, that put the visitors on top. It started in the ninth over when Olivier claimed his first of five wickets in the innings, removing Cameron Steel for one.
Then followed a passage of three wickets falling in the space of 12 balls as Durham slipped to 26-4. The opening pair both picked up two wickets to complete a terrific first hour for the visitors.
Graham Clark (19) and Gareth Harte (20) responded with a 38-run partnership in just over 11 overs, but the pair would both fall before lunch. The stand would prove to be the biggest of the Durham innings.
Gleadall (1-20), making his first-class debut, first bowled Harte with a quick moving delivery to pick up his maiden first-class wicket, before Tony Palladino (1-17) had Clark caught behind, with the hosts 66-6 at the interval.
It was back to Olivier and Viljoen after the restart and together they claimed the last four wickets for just an additional 30 runs. Olivier ended with 5-20, while Viljoen finished with 3-30, including the last wicket of Josh Coughlin for 19, as Durham were all out for 96 in 43.3 overs.
Derbyshire lost an early wicket in reply, but Madsen and Ben Slater respond well with a 58-run partnership in just over 13 overs. Slater was second man out for 32 off Nathan Rimmington, but the visitors were in a good position on 78-2 at tea.
The hosts fought back after the restart taking six wickets for 57 runs to bring them back into the match. Madsen went for 36, while Critchley hit 38 off 45 balls, but regular wickets fell to reduce Derbyshire to 135-8.
But an unbroken 40-run stand for the ninth-wicket between Palladino and Gleadall made sure Derbyshire would end the day on top.
