Wayne Madsen hit a well-made 80 but Leicestershire took control on Day One of the historic first day/night Specsavers County Championship match at The 3aaa County Ground.
Paul Horton remains unbeaten on 48 as Leicestershire closed on 82-0 after Callum Parkinson had earlier taken three wickets to restrict the hosts to 245.
After Derbyshire were put into bat by the visitors, openers Ben Slater and Harvey Hosein got off to a watchful start as Muhammad Abbas found movement with the pink ball.
The opening pair brought up the fifty partnership in the 14th over before Abbas’ persistent line and length paid dividends as he claimed the wicket of Hosein for 19.
Madsen joined Slater at the crease as the latter hit three boundaries in quick succession to kick on after losing the first wicket.
However, Callum Parkinson came into the attack to dismiss Slater for a well-made 46 on the stroke of lunch to leave the score at 93-2.
Parkinson continued strongly after the break as he removed both Hughes and Godleman without scoring while Critchley joined Madsen at the crease as the pair set about rebuilding the Derbyshire innings.
Madsen was at his fluent best as he recorded his fourth half-century of the campaign with consecutive boundaries shortly after he had brought up a 50-run partnership with Critchley.
The partnership was worth 62 before Critchley fell to Neil Dexter in the 45th over as Derbyshire started to lose wickets at regular intervals.
Smit (11) and Viljoen (29) made short cameos before losing their wickets and Ben Raine struck twice to remove Madsen for a confident 80 from 143 balls and Olivier without scoring.
Abbas returned to take the final wicket of Ravi Rampaul (0) as Derbyshire posted a score of 245.
Leicestershire’s openers started strongly in reply as Olivier found movement off the pitch but Harry Dearden and Horton held firm to take the visitors onto 43-0 after 10 overs.
The South Africa international continued with his menacing spell and Dearden was struck by a rising delivery and was forced to retire hurt on nine at the end of the 13th over.
Colin Ackermann joined Horton at the crease to maintain the visitors’ progress as they continued to accelerate on to 68-0 after 20 overs.
Derbyshire bowlers Olivier and Tony Palladino continued to test the outside edge of the Leicestershire batsmen, but ultimately the visitors took control at the end of Day One.
