Tony Palladino claimed his 13th five-wicket haul for Derbyshire, before Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen both hit half-centuries on Day Two versus Kent at The 3aaa County Ground.
Palladino claimed three wickets in the day to finish with 5-113 in the innings, but scores for Grant Stewart (85) and Matt Henry (81) helped Kent post a commanding 561 in their first innings.
The hosts responded well in the final two sessions of the day, with debutant Tom Lace (pictured) hitting 40 before both Godleman and Madsen passed 50, as Derbyshire closed on 210-2.
It was Palladino who got the day’s first breakthrough as Daniel Bell-Drummond was caught behind by Harvey Hosein for 44, with Kent 393-7.
This brought Henry to the crease and together with Stewart the pair added 119 runs in 20 overs for the eighth wicket. Stewart hit 13 fours before he was dismissed just before the lunch interval, bowled by Alex Hughes (2-58) for 85 off 122 balls.
Palladino returned after the restart and claimed the final two wickets in the space of two balls. Henry fell for a career-best 81 off just 75 balls, which included six fours and four sixes, before Riley was caught off the next delivery for 23.
Palladino finished with 5-113 off 30.4 overs, taking his tally to 299 first-class wickets for Derbyshire, and Kent were all out for 561.
Godleman and 20-year-old Tom Lace, on loan from Middlesex and making his first-class debut, started well sharing a 69-run opening stand.
Lace played with authority in his first appearance scoring 40 from 64 balls, including seven fours, before he was lbw to Ivan Thomas to leave Derbyshire 98-1 at tea.
Godleman continued to bat well in the final session before he was bowled by Thomas for a well-made 71 off 151 balls with 12 fours. It was the only wicket to fall in the session as Madsen closed the day unbeaten on 60 and Alex Hughes 20 not out, with Derbyshire 210-2, trailing by 351 runs.
