All-rounder Sean Ervine, who is on loan at Derbyshire from Hampshire, has announced his retirement from professional cricket.
After making his Hampshire debut 13 years ago and featuring in 486 matches for the county, the 35-year-old has elected to call time on his career with immediate effect. He made two first-class appearances for Derbyshire.
Ervine, known for his excellent ability with both bat and ball, has accumulated 15,400 runs across all formats including 20 centuries and 74 fifties, whilst also claiming 373 wickets with the ball.
Ervine said: “Yesterday I made the biggest decision of my life. After 14 years playing county cricket I have decided to hang up my shirt. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Hampshire for giving me the opportunity to advance my career, after having to retire from international cricket with Zimbabwe prematurely.
“I’ve been lucky to play alongside some wonderful people along the way and made some fantastic friends. To the fans who have supported me all these years, I salute you. I’m extremely proud of what I’ve achieved, and I feel honoured that I got to achieve it at Hampshire.
“I’ve always put the team first above everything else, and done it wholeheartedly. I’d finally like to thank my family for their phenomenal sacrifices and support over the years, of which my dream couldn’t be possible.”
Billy Godleman added: “Sean shared with the group yesterday that he’s had a long hard think about his career and he’s decided to retire from the game.
“Although he’s only been with us for a couple of games, we’ve all played against him for many years and he’s been a fantastic performer and most importantly a really good solid cricket man and he’s one of the good guys in professional cricket.”
