Billy Godleman scored an unbeaten century as Derbyshire Second XI defeated Nottinghamshire by 25 runs by Duckworth/Lewis in a One-Day Trophy fixture at The 3aaa County Ground.
Hundreds from Nottinghamshire opener Greg Smith and overseas Dan Christian meant that the visitors posted an imposing 379-6 from their 50 overs, setting Derbyshire a mammoth 380 to win.
Godleman and Ben Slater batted positively to score 123 not out and 72 respectively and help Derbyshire get up to 244-2 in just the 32nd over of the reply when the rain came and handed them victory.
Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby graduate Greg Cork took the first two wickets for Derbyshire after they had been asked to field. Nottinghamshire skipper Tom Moores fell for 21 before Sam Wood played well for his 71 and then became Cork’s second victim.
Smith had opened for Nottinghamshire and played very well, scoring 138 at just over a-run-a-ball until he was caught by Godleman off the bowling of Tony Palladino.
Christian was Smith’s partner for a third-wicket stand that had yielded 159 runs in quick time. Christian’s century was much quicker than Smith’s, as he scored 115 runs from only 47 balls with 14 fours and 6 sixes to take Nottinghamshire up and beyond 300.
Will Root (4) and Will Gidman (0) both fell cheaply to the bowling of Harry White but that did not stop the visitors posting 379-6.
In reply, Derbyshire openers Godleman and Slater attacked the Nottinghamshire bowling from the off. By the time Slater fell for 72 (56 balls, 9 fours, 1 six), Derbyshire were on 150-1 in the 18th over, already far ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score.
Despite the loss of his opening partner, Godleman continued to play aggressively. He brought up his century from only 75 balls in the 28th over with the score on 218-2.
Godleman had been joined by Harvey Hosein, after Jonathan Clare was dismissed for three, and the 18-year-old wicketkeeper complimented Godleman well.
By the time the rain came in the 32nd over, Derbyshire were on 244-2 with Godleman 123 not out and Hosein unbeaten on 38, 25 runs ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score for that over.
