Andrew Umeed hit an unbeaten 128 as Derbyshire tried to force a result on Day Two of the Second XI Championship match against Sussex at Blackstone Academy Ground.
The middle-order batsman was dominant after Derbyshire lost early wickets and helped his side to 275-8 declared in an attempt to earn a positive result heading into the final day of the three-day fixture.
Resuming on 353-9, Sussex were all out for 382 and soon had Derbyshire 99-4 as the top-order struggled to settle.
Umeed built partnerships with Finlay Trenouth (43) and Zen Malik (25) as Derbyshire rebuilt before declaring on 275-8, with a deficit of 107, but time left in the game to force a result in the final Second XI Championship match of the season.
Sussex resisted Derbyshire’s attempts for late wickets and reached 50 without loss at the close, with a lead of 157 runs overnight.
