Written by Tom Skinner

Mark Watt and Sam Conners both took three wickets as Derbyshire beat a strong Warwickshire side by 87 runs in the Second XI Trophy at Moseley CC.

Watt (3-43) made his first appearance for the club, while Tom Wood also hit 116 as the Second XI started the season with back-to-back victories.

Derbyshire were reduced to 4-1 in the first over, but a 163-run partnership between Tyler McGladdery and Wood put the visitors in a strong position on 167-1 after 30 overs.

McGladdery then fell for 63 as Sam Oldham (4) was also dismissed in the same over but Fynn Hudson-Prentice (46) came to the crease to join Wood as the pair accelerated the score to 253-3.

Three wickets then fell in quick succession before Daryn Smit (31 not out) and Watt (12 not out) added 42 for the seventh wicket to take Derbyshire to 303-6 at the end of the innings.

Alfie Gleadall got the early breakthrough in the hosts’ reply to remove Ed Pollock (12), as Alex Oxley and Robert Yates (79) steadied the ship before Watt took his first to remove the former for 47.

Watt then took another as Matthew Lamb (10) also fell, before Conners returned to the attack to pick up three quick wickets, including the scalps of Chris Woakes (13) and Alex Thomson (1).

Oliver Hannon-Dalby (18) provided some late resistance, but it wasn’t enough as Derbyshire bowled Warwickshire out for 216 to claim an 87-run victory.
